Nollywood actress Ini Edo has misplaced her declare to the possession rights of the hit Netflix collection “Shanty City” to filmmaker Chinenye Nworah.

In January 2024, Ini Edo and her company, Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP), initiated a legal challenge against Nworah and GCM, filing a double intellectual property petition.

The petition sought to claim possession over the logos and copyrights related to the favored collection.

Nevertheless, the Nigerian Copyright Fee (NCC) and the Nigerian Trademark Registry have dominated in opposition to Ini Edo.

The authorities dismissed the petition as frivolous and missing in benefit. The NCC additionally rejected a separate request from Edo and MEP to annul two copyright certificates beforehand awarded to Nworah for “Shanty City” — one for the literary work (Certificates Quantity LW10177) and one other for the audiovisual work (Certificates Quantity CF1448).

In response to the ruling, Nworah’s lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba, acknowledged: “The profitable protection of those claims highlights the significance of defending inventive works and making certain honest compensation for artists.”
