Nationwide Human Rights Fee (NHRC) has condemned the molestation of journalists by the police at Eagle Sq. throughout the protest.

In response to the manager secretary of the NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the act is a transparent violation of their basic human rights and a blatant try and suppress freedom of the press.

An announcement signed by the NHRC’s director, cooperate affairs and exterior linkages, Obinna Nwakonye, stated journalists have the constitutional proper to hold out their duties with out concern of intimidation, harassment, or molestation.

Ojukwu stated molested together with Jide Oyekunle, chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ ) FCT correspondents chapel and journalist with Day by day Impartial Newspaper; Yakubu Mohammed of Premium Instances; Mary Adeboye of Information Central Tv and Kayode Jaiyeola, a photojournalist with Punch Newspaper, didn’t deserve the remedy meted to them.

In response to the ES, the police motion undermined the rules of democracy and the rule of legislation.

“We name on the Nigeria Police to respect the rights of journalists and protesters, and make sure that their actions align with worldwide human rights requirements.”

Dr. Ojukwu stated the fee was calling on the Inspector Normal of Police to analyze the incident and take crucial steps to carry perpetrators accountable and report the motion taken to NHRC inside 10 days.

“We reiterate our dedication to defending human rights and selling a tradition of respect for the rule of legislation in Nigeria,” he added.
